Endless Blockades For The Pussyfooter

My man Andy Smetanka included this in an issue of his boffo Shat Upon zine six or seven years ago, mmm-hmm. He was collecting Japanese hardcore records pretty avidly back then, as I recall, and had become fascinated with the lyrics. I remember coming over to Andy's flat one day and he was listening to one of these records and he showed me the lyric sheet, and it totally blew my hair back. Anyone who's even slightly intrigued with words and language can't help but be transfixed by these oddments of anguished English, and can't help but marvel at how utterly bizarro it seems to a native English speaker. It's also fascinating which words and ideas get picked up on most often in these bands' lyrics, like "system." It's pretty unusual to see a Japcore record that doesn't have system in it somewhere.

So Andy ended up compiling his favorite lyrical snippets and solicited Ken Sanderson (of Prank Records and MRR columnar fame) and Jeff from Capitalist Casualties to pitch in their favorites as well. And by the way, this is an abridged version of the original article. I truncated it quite a bit in the interest of space. And, as Andy says in the original piece: "all spelling, punctuation, and grammar errors left affectionately intact."

It's worth noting that Japanese Hardcore is very much an acquired taste; in fact it's pert' near unlistenable for most people. Most of it is an extremely shrill and abrasive flurry of Cookie Monster grunting and crashing cymbals, more Cookie Monster grunting and shrieking guitar. Some of the songs are like eight seconds long. Aside from the awesome lyrics, I never had much interest in Japcore myself. But the fun never ends for the avid enthusiast, as these records (at least in the late 90s; I'm not sure about now) proliferate like prairie dogs, almost all of them hastily packaged in black-and-white photocopied sleeves, each one essentially indistiguishable from the next.
